University of Lahore Suspends Classes After Student Fall Incident

Lahore: A serious incident at the University of Lahore has once again raised concerns about student safety and mental health on campuses across Punjab. A 21-year-old female student was critically injured after falling from the fourth floor of a university building on Monday, according to police and hospital officials.

The student, identified as Fatima, is enrolled in the Doctor of Pharmacy program. Police officials said the circumstances surrounding the fall are still under investigation, with initial information suggesting possible domestic or personal stress factors. However, authorities stressed that no final conclusion has been reached at this stage.

This is the second such incident in less than two weeks at the university, both involving students from the D-Pharmacy department, which has intensified concern among students, parents, and education experts.

Police Review CCTV Footage, Await Student Statement

According to police sources, all available CCTV footage from the university premises has been taken into custody and is currently being reviewed. Investigators stated that legal proceedings will move forward after recording the student’s statement, once her medical condition allows.

So far, the student’s family has not submitted a formal application requesting legal action. Police officials confirmed that if any negligence on the part of the university administration is established, appropriate action will be taken under the law.

From my point of view, relying on verified investigation rather than speculation is crucial in such sensitive cases, especially when a young life is involved.

Student Shifted to Private Hospital, Condition Critical

University and hospital sources confirmed that the student survived the fall but sustained serious injuries to her spine and lungs. She was initially taken to the university’s teaching hospital for emergency treatment and later shifted to a private hospital on Defence Road due to the severity of her condition.

Hospital officials said the student is currently on a ventilator and remains in critical care. Multiple medical tests have been conducted, and doctors are closely monitoring her progress.

The University of Lahore Registrar stated that the student’s condition has shown some stabilization, adding that she was admitted to the university in September.

University Suspends On-Campus Classes Amid Safety Concerns

Following the incident, the university administration announced the indefinite suspension of all on-campus academic activities. In an official notification, physical classes were cancelled, and teaching was shifted to online mode until further notice.

All entry and exit points of the campus were temporarily sealed as panic spread among students. The administration cited student safety as the primary reason behind the decision.

In my opinion, temporary closures alone are not enough. Incidents like this demand deeper review of campus safety systems, student support mechanisms, and mental health services.

Students Demand Inquiry and Mental Health Support

The incident has sparked fear and anger among students, many of whom are now demanding an independent inquiry. Students have also called for:

  • Proper mental health counselling services
  • On-campus psychologists and helplines
  • Stronger safety barriers in multi-story buildings
  • Clear emergency response protocols

As someone who closely follows education-related developments, I believe repeated incidents should be treated as a warning sign rather than isolated events.

Ongoing Investigation and Official Advice

Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and urged the public to avoid speculation until official findings are released. Authorities have advised students and parents to rely only on verified information issued by police or the university administration.

The case has once again highlighted the urgent need for student mental health awareness, institutional responsibility, and preventive safety measures across higher education institutions in Punjab.

Further updates are expected once the investigation progresses and the student’s condition improves.
